RGS & AWS Partners with New York DEC on Habitat Project

September 30, 2024 by Ruffed Grouse Society

By Erik Latremore and James Canevari, New York Department of Environmental Conservation Nearly a decade ago, in 2015, the New York Department of Environmental Conservation (NY DEC) recognized that younger forests were needed to support many species being observed to have population declines. The DEC kicked off the Young Forest Program to create habitat for a whole host of wildlife species and to better the health and diversity of forests on Wildlife Management Areas (WMA). Part of this initiative involved support from many cooperating partners like the National Wild Turkey Federation, Ruffed Grouse Society & American Woodcock Society (RGS & AWS),...

Action Alert: U.S. Forest Service National Old-Growth Amendment

September 13, 2024 by Ruffed Grouse Society

At RGS & AWS, we’re proud to work with the U.S. Forest Service on sound forest management that promotes abundant wildlife, healthy forests, and opportunities for people to enjoy the outdoors. As the USFS considers a proposal that would guide stewardship of old growth and mature forests, we commend the Service for staying true to its mission – and relying on sound science as a guide. This despite a steady drumbeat of falsehoods and faux research from anti-forest management groups. RGS & AWS staff have been focused on this issue for over two years. Now, your input is sought by the Forest...

“Drumming” Up Habitat in Massachusetts: A Private Landowner’s Experience with RGS & AWS

September 12, 2024 by Ruffed Grouse Society

Surprisingly to most, the Commonwealth of Massachusetts ranks eighth as the most forested state in the country, with 79% of its forests privately owned. As part of that 79%, I believe landowners have an obligation to practice land stewardship. My view on stewardship is simple: address the needs of your forest today to create a healthier tomorrow. Creating and executing a stewardship vision is a process that brings me much enjoyment and satisfaction. The ability to focus on creating tomorrow through proper management of one of our greatest natural resources—our forests—is a privilege. This past summer, our property had a unique...

June 7, 2024 by Ruffed Grouse Society

Amelia “Melly” Napper is joining the Northeast region as a Public Lands Forester in Vermont, working in partnership with the Green Mountain National Forest silviculture team. Napper recently graduated from the Yale School of the Environment with a master’s in forestry. During her time at Yale, she focused on building the skills she needed to work as a forester in the Northeast and engage with diverse stakeholders to accomplish their goals related to land conservation and stewardship.   Prior to her master’s, Napper attended Warren Wilson College in western North Carolina, where her studies focused on water resources and the use...

Satellite Tracking and the Science of Woodcock Migration

May 24, 2024 by Ruffed Grouse Society

by Erik Blomberg, Associate Professor and Chair, Department of Wildlife Fisheries and Conservation Biology, University of Maine Each year around the second week of March, I make a habit of standing in my central Maine backyard around dusk, waiting and hoping to hear the peent!s and twittering sky dance of the first male woodcock of spring. For me, the return of woodcock marks the true end of the Maine winter. Eight months later, sometime in November, my dog will point the last woodcock of the year, signaling the end of fall. I suspect I’m not the only one who uses woodcock...
