It’s the Little Things …

November 29, 2021 by admin

Written by: Doug FranklinMemphis, TN Everything happens for a reason, right? At least that’s the thinking for those of us who can’t always make sense of life’s twists and turns that seem to come at us faster as we get older. We try to lean on our faith, and give thanks for the little things and big influences in our lives. But reminders of our mortality often make that easier said than done. That’s the way our conversation was going anyway. Maybe because it was a dark, rainy day at the end of one season and the beginning of another, the brief “cast...

The Long Lake Grouse

November 29, 2021 by admin

Written by: Jerome McAllisterStone Lake, WI Photo credit: Jason Gooding I have owned a vintage log cabin on Sissabagama Lake since 1992. At the beginning of the 20th Century great stands of white pine around Sissabagama in Sawyer County, Wisconsin were cut down. I imagine the county was named for the men who did the cutting. A canal was dug to float the logs to Slim Creek, about a half mile west into neighboring Washburn County. The canal is visible today, along with remnant dikes built across Sissabagama’s low areas to assist in raising the lake’s water level. Once on Slim Creek,...

Old Friends and New Coverts

November 23, 2021 by admin

Written by: Joe PeikertHortonville, WI It had been decades since I had been to the lakeside cabin of some very good friends.  I had missed our annual waterfowl trip to North Dakota this year and was looking for an opportunity to hunt with Brad.  When I figured out he was going to be at his family cabin in northern Wisconsin on a weekend I had open, I shamelessly suggested we might get together for a hunt.  An invitation followed that did not require any thought on my part to accept.  On road trips I like think time.  My drive northward would...

Autumn Blaze: A Story of Firsts

November 23, 2021 by admin

Written by: David MillerChatham- Kent, Ontario  “Nice and slow” my father whispered to my brother and I as we followed in his steps along a trail meandering the side of a hill on a neighbour’s property in the Almaguin Highlands of Eastern Parry Sound, Ontario. We had travelled from our home in Chatham-Kent, Ontario, for the weekend to our family’s cabin. Our parents had taken us to our family’s minimalistic, handmade cabin every Spring and Fall to spend time together and to escape the hustle and bustle of careers and school. Much of the time spent there was devoted to nature...

Written by: Vaughn Paul JonesOdessa, FL Featured image provide by Art Fair entry “Gertie” courtesy of Ted Walzl If the goal of mankind is to find true happiness, we should forego looking for ways to extend our own lives and find ways to extend our dogs’ lives.                    The Author A child born since the beginning of the millennium has probably been photographed hundreds of times before he or she reaches school age. This is a recent phenomenon brought on by the electronic revolution. In the middle of the twentieth century, cameras were common, but the film...

Good Boy

November 23, 2021 by admin

Written by: Alex JonesVineland, Ontario Credit: Alan Davy While we stood over the remaining two puppies in the litter, my heart was filled with anxious feelings. “The male or the female?” I thought to myself, “this one seems more independent… what if I pick a dud? I can’t afford to start over if I screw this up” I broke the intense silence asking the breeder “could we have a look at the parents again?” As we walked out to the kennel, I was racking my brain trying to remember every bit of information from the hundreds of articles and videos that I...
