Action Alert: Stearns Ruffed Grouse Habitat Management Project

October 4, 2024 by Ruffed Grouse Society

RGS & AWS commends the Forest Service on their efforts to restore young forest habitat at biologically significant scales. We’re fully supportive of the proposed action outlined in the Stearns Ruffed Grouse Habitat Management Project on the Stearns Ranger District of the Daniel Boone National Forest. Urgent action is needed at the landscape scale, above and beyond localized habitat improvement efforts, to halt the decline in ruffed grouse and other forest wildlife in eastern Kentucky before it’s too late. Speak out in support of managing for early successional wildlife habitat today! Public comment is being accepted until October 18, 2024. Below are some...

Action Alert: U.S. Forest Service National Old-Growth Amendment

September 13, 2024 by Ruffed Grouse Society

At RGS & AWS, we’re proud to work with the U.S. Forest Service on sound forest management that promotes abundant wildlife, healthy forests, and opportunities for people to enjoy the outdoors. As the USFS considers a proposal that would guide stewardship of old growth and mature forests, we commend the Service for staying true to its mission – and relying on sound science as a guide. This despite a steady drumbeat of falsehoods and faux research from anti-forest management groups. RGS & AWS staff have been focused on this issue for over two years. Now, your input is sought by the Forest...

Conservation Coming Soon …

September 4, 2024 by Ruffed Grouse Society

RGS & AWS is growing its conservation delivery team to improve habitat right where it’s needed most as told to Kristyn Brady This spring, RGS & AWS set out to grow its conservation delivery team in an important region for American woodcock – the Coastal Plain and Piedmont of North Carolina, South Carolina, southeastern Virginia and eastern Georgia – expanding the footprint of the organization and its habitat work based on cutting edge research. President and CEO Ben Jones sat down for a Q&A to discuss this new forest conservation director role, how hiring in a new region affirms the organization’s business model...

RGS & AWS Forest Service Partnership Improves Habitat in Kentucky’s Daniel Boone National Forest, Draws Partner Praise

June 12, 2024 by Ruffed Grouse Society

A diverse roster of conservation and resource management agencies underscored the importance of sustainable, science-based forest management to wildlife in a stewardship agreement being led by the Ruffed Grouse Society & American Woodcock Society and the U.S. Forest Service. The multi-year partnership in the Daniel Boone National Forest in southeast Kentucky is improving close to a thousand acres of forest wildlife habitat. Habitat diversity, achieved when forests are managed to create a variety of age classes and structures, is critical to healthy forest wildlife populations, the stakeholder groups stressed. On the Boone, young forest conditions are essential to reversing population declines…

Action Alert: Virginia

May 22, 2024 by Ruffed Grouse Society

Until Friday May 24th, RGS members can support forest management and habitat improvement on the GW-Jeff National Forest. RGS will submit formal comments, but it’s very helpful for individuals to also submit comments supporting active forest management and prescribed fire to create diverse, quality habitat for grouse and other wildlife. Submit your comments here: https://cara.fs2c.usda.gov/Public/CommentInput?Project=64669 These are some of the points you can make in your comments: Current forest conditions don’t support healthy forests or abundant wildlife populations. The GW-Jeff needs to do forest management projects like this to help move stands toward the desired conditions as outlined in the Forest Plan. The North Zone Prescribed Fire…
