The Jersey Shore chapter of the American Woodcock Society and the NJ Fish and Wildlife team have completed our fourth partnership for a habitat project on NJ Wildlife Management areas. This important partnership between the two organizations has delivered 4 successful projects in NJ over the past 4 years.
We assembled on Sunday May 19th, 2024 at Prospertown Lake WMA, Monmouth County NJ. This was a continuation of our 2021 project. We planted 126 alder trees to create staggered growth edges and also planted 20 persimmon fruit trees for the turkeys. We then applied seedling protector tubes so we can protect the trees as they mature. Thanks to all who volunteered! We will continue to monitor our progress this Summer and the NJ Fish and Wildlife team will review the option to mow the areas
we planted to help reduce competing growth.
This habitat project is a great example of how AWS and NJ Fish and Wildlife partner to provide for American Woodcock on NJ public lands. It also is a strong commitment to demonstrate how AWS is supporting local NJ projects so our chapter can grow and demonstrate how local donations are helping right in our members’ backyards.
We would like to thank the NJ Fish and Wildlife team for providing the alder and persimmon fruit trees and their commitment to be great partners. Special thanks to Melissa Woerner (Senior Biologist/Regional Habitat Planner, New Jersey DEP Fish and Wildlife, Bureau of Land Management) for working on her day off. We look forward to another project in the future!
