23 Woodcock In 22 Years – a Book Review

September 30, 2025 by Ruffed Grouse Society

by Jeff Wilkerson 23 Woodcock in 22 Years: Reflection on Hunting, the Night Sky and Our Place in the Universe Published: November 2024 University of Iowa Press Retail Price: $24 Woodcock cast a magical spell over many hunters. Much has been written about these migratory gamebirds, from lyrical poems and treatises to how-to discussions and biological books. Natural Connections: The pulse of a waking forest

April 30, 2025 by Ruffed Grouse Society

by Emily M. Stone, Naturalist/Education Director at the Cable Natural History Museum Ruffed grouse drumming; Neal Herbert; May 2014 Our morning dawned crisp and blue. In the woods, we knew that the trails would be firmly frozen, the mosquitoes still far from flying, and perhaps the ticks would be hunkered down, too. This chilly spring weather is a perfect match for a hike on the North Country Trail. Book Review: “Hunting: A Cultural History”

December 11, 2023 by Ruffed Grouse Society

by Glen Blackwood, RGS & AWS Director of Regional Development – Lower Peninsula/Eastern U.P. of Michigan & Indiana “Hunting: A Cultural History” By Jan E. Dizard and Mary Zeiss Stange ISBN: 978-0262543293 mitpress.mit.edu Humans have recorded stories of the hunt for centuries. First, it was through symbolism, with cave drawings in Lascaux, France and Altamira, Spain. While these images seem crude when compared to modern photo-realistic sporting art, they express amazing detail, demonstrating the importance of hunters understanding their quarry. While a variety of artistic mediums have continued to describe the hunt, both verbal and written histories have taken the forefront...

Appalachian Ruffed Grouse: Ecology and Management

August 4, 2020 by Anthony Giattino

A synopsis and review of the book Appalachian Ruffed Grouse: Ecology and Management

The Appalachian ruffed grouse population is like a classic, small-market major league baseball team battling the Yankees or Red Sox; the odds are against them because of a disparity of resources. Unlike their kin of the North Woods, Appalachian grouse lack aspen trees for food and cover, which Gordon Gullion, a leading expert on grouse during his lifetime, considered their prime habitat. Nevertheless, ruffed grouse are adaptable birds that have thrived in Appalachia for thousands of years.
