GROUSE AND WOODCOCK HUNTING GATEWAYS

August 6, 2017 by Matt Soberg

A focus on simple gateways to grouse hunting can recruit our next generation of hunters.

By Matt Soberg, RGS/AWS Editor & Director of Communications

We always hear about perceived barriers to entry purportedly inherent in grouse and woodcock hunting. “There are no birds around, and it’s hard to find them. The cover is so thick, too hard and strenuous. When you do find birds, the shots are impossible. Guns are intimidating, and I don’t know how to train a bird dog.” Blah, blah, blah.

Grouse hunting is not that scary. Trust me.

What is it like to watch a drummer?

February 17, 2017 by Matt Soberg

CONNECTING THE DOTS . . . From Habitat to Hunting

By Matt Soberg, RGS & AWS Editor & Director of Communications

This is what it’s like to watch a spring drummer connect the dots from habitat to hunting . . .

2 (1024x728)

I lifted my Kromer above my left ear thinking I had heard a faint rustle of leaves down the hill from my strategically placed location. I set my Thermos cup of coffee onto the ground’s newly-green, late-April shoots and leaned my head forward toward one of the opened blind windows for a better vantage point. Sure enough, my ears were right . . . the pitter-patter of small feet traipsing across the forest floor was getting closer . . . and louder . . . and closer.

The DNR’s Wildlife Habitat Grant program aims to improve game species habitat.

The Grand Traverse Conservation District, a previous grant recipient,

used grant funds for a project that provided food and habitat for wildlife

by developing early successional forests, creating a small wetland

and planting mast-producing trees in Grand Traverse County.

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources today announced the recipients of the 2016 Wildlife Habitat Grants. A total of $933,892 was awarded to various conservation organizations, units of government, landowners and nonprofit organizations for projects to be completed by Sept. 30, 2018.

Scout Spring Drummers & Find Fall Covers

April 25, 2016 by Matt Soberg

Off-season scouting can lead to important clues and fall success in the grouse woods, and NOW is the time to go!

Soberg grouse 2

Watching a male ruffed grouse drum his spring beat from less than 20 yards away is quite the surreal experience, especially considering we barely see a glimpse of them post flush in the fall as they dodge young trees toward their escape route.
