Ruffed Grouse Society & American Woodcock Society is included as a partner in a collaborative forest management project led by the National Wild Turkey Federation (NWTF) and SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry at the Pack Demonstration Forest in New York. The project centers on active timber harvesting designed to improve forest structure, increase biodiversity and create young forest conditions that benefit wildlife species that rely on early successional habitat. Photo courtesy of Allison Brusa from NWTF The work includes a 15-acre timber harvest that is part of a larger 128-acre demonstration area dominated by eastern hemlock, sugar maple, birch and...

Restoring Forest Diversity Across 110 Acres at Grass Mountain in Vermont

December 16, 2025 by Ruffed Grouse Society

by Amelia ‘Melly’ Napper, RGS & AWS Vermont Public Lands Forester Grass Mountain is a stewardship project associated with the Early Successional Habitat Creation project. It is located on the only U.S. Forest Service parcel within the Taconic Mountain biophysical region of Vermont. While red oak is present on the landscape, heavy competition from diseased American beech sprouts has prevented successful regeneration in the understory. Without disturbance, this forest...

Know Your Cover – Champlain Valley, New York and Vermont

December 4, 2025 by Ruffed Grouse Society

by Luke McNally, RGS & AWS Champlain Region Forester “I used to see a lot of birds around here and now I don’t.” This is the comment I hear more than any other in response to my introduction. Standing in line at the gas station in Addison, Vermont, a farmer, a tradesman or a local cabin-dweller tells me: “We used to see those on the side of the road all the time… I don’t see them anymore.” There are several reasons why folks in the country don’t see “pah-tridge” as much these days. A reduction in wildlife occupancy should always be blamed...

July 10, 2025 by Ruffed Grouse Society

Featured Habitat Project – Covers Winter 2025 by Amelia “Melly” Napper | RGS & AWS Vermont Public Lands Forester In September 2023, RGS & AWS entered into its latest agreement with the U.S. Forest Service (USFS) to support forest management and implement on-the-ground habitat improvements on 6,000 acres across four iconic American national forests from Minnesota to Vermont’s Green Mountain National Forest.
