The Canaan Valley Veterans Woodcock Hunt by Clay Williamson
As the crisp autumn air settles into Canaan Valley, West Virginia, the landscape transforms into a stunning canvas of vibrant foliage and golden fields. This picturesque setting, which holds historical significance as the hunting grounds of renowned author George Bird Evans, becomes the backdrop for an annual event that not only celebrates the thrill of the hunt but also honors those who have served in the armed forces. Organized over a week that encompasses Veterans Day, this longstanding and cherished tradition supports veterans through intentional camaraderie and deepening the participants’ connection with nature.
Unique Topography and Flora of Canaan Valley
Canaan Valley is characterized by its unique topography, which features a mix of rolling hills, expansive wetlands, and rich forests. Nestled within the Allegheny Mountains at an elevation of approximately 3,200 feet, the valley is one of the highest and most beautiful in West Virginia. Its distinct geography creates a variety of habitats that support a wide range of flora and fauna, making it a prime stop for woodcock along their annual migration.
The valley is renowned for its diverse ecosystems, including mixed hardwood forests, open fields, and vibrant marshlands. The forests are predominantly composed of oak, maple, hawthorn and beech trees, interspersed with conifers such as red spruce and eastern hemlock. As autumn arrives, the foliage transforms into a breathtaking array of reds, oranges, and yellows, providing a stunning backdrop for hunters. The wetlands are pocketed in alder thickets and other rich vegetation that offer critical habitat for migratory birds, including the woodcock, which thrive in the valley.
Canaan Valley’s unique climate is another factor that contributes to its ecological richness. The region experiences a relatively cool climate, with ample snow and rainfall that creates lush vegetation and supports diverse wildlife. The combination of high altitude, fertile soils, and varied landscapes makes Canaan Valley a remarkable area for both hunting and conservation.
Rooted in Tradition
The Canaan Valley Woodcock Hunt is a gathering of upland hunters, wildlife conservationists, and veterans of all ages dedicated to celebrating the annual migration of woodcock through the valley’s unique habitat. The event typically spans a week in early November, typically coinciding with the peak migration period for these elusive birds and encompassing Veterans Day. As participants break into smaller groups each morning toting double guns to follow an array pointing dogs into productive coverts, they also carry with them a profound respect for the land and its wildlife.
For over 30 years, icons of the sport such as Walt Lesser, author and contemporary of George Bird Evans, retired Navy Captain Ed Nicholson, founder of Project Healing Waters Fly Fishing, and Bill Cartwright have led the event. Their continued involvement adds prestige to the hunt and their decades of experience inspires participants to embrace the rich traditions of bird hunting, conservation, and veterans helping veterans. They share their knowledge of bird dogs, fine guns and the valley’s coverts with younger vets and newer hunters.
Over half of the participants this year were members of the Central Maryland Chapter of RGS. Gradually the Chapter’s role in organizing the hunt is increasing. “Our focus is on maintaining the long established character of this hunt”, said Ted Gattino, Chapter President. It is a small, exclusive, invitation only event that is focused on veterans, fellowship, and tradition. Most members return year after year but there are always opportunities for a few new hunters. Costs for attendees are very low. Each year, a portion of the proceeds from the hunt are allocated to support woodcock habitat projects.
Healing Through Nature
Nature has long been recognized for its therapeutic benefits, and the Canaan Valley Woodcock Hunt embodies this philosophy. For many veterans, the opportunity to immerse themselves in the tranquility of the great outdoors serves as a welcome respite from the stresses of everyday life. The camaraderie fostered during the hunt creates a supportive environment where veterans can share their experiences, forge new friendships, and find solace in shared passions.
Participants often recount stories of their time in the military, sharing both the challenges they faced and the resilience they developed. The hunt provides a space for healing conversations and camaraderie, allowing veterans to connect with one another in a meaningful way.
The Role of Conservation
In addition to its focus on supporting veterans, the Canaan Valley Woodcock Hunt emphasizes the importance of wildlife conservation. The event brings attention to the delicate ecosystems that sustain the woodcock population and the need for responsible hunting practices. All participants become conservationists and the fireside discussions often focus on habitat preservation and the importance of ethical hunting.
By fostering a sense of responsibility towards the environment, the hunt not only serves as a recreational activity but also as an educational experience. Participants leave with a deeper understanding of their role in preserving the natural world, ensuring that future generations can enjoy the same outdoor experiences.
