Agreement Narrative: Pere Marquette Forest Habitat Collective

Location: Baldwin Ranger District, Huron-Manistee National Forest, Michigan
Innovation: A landscape-level forest habitat enhancement project focused within the Pere-Marquette River watershed. By leveraging the specialties of partner organizations, it aims to manage a variety of cover types by employing multiple strategies. Service work items target forest structural and age class diversity, an increase in native plant diversity, thermal cover, forage, pollinator plantings, and edge habitat for wildlife.
Impact: This project directly impacts 320 acres of habitat and is part of a larger strategy that includes over 14,000 acres of NEPA Projects and associated treatments that will be implemented in multiple entries over the next 15 years. This work includes:
- 100 acres of non-commercial aspen management
- 90 acres of oak open-land creation/restoration
- 60 acres of cluster-planting within oak savannas
- 22 acres of oak/pine barrens vegetation treatment
- 38 acres of oak savanna vegetation treatment and pollinator planting
- 3.5 acres of private lands tree planting
Partners: Primary Implementation partners include Conservation Resource Alliance, EcoCorps SEEDS, Youthworks Industries, Huron-Manistee National Forest – Baldwin Ranger District, Michigan Department of Natural Resources. Additional assistance in private lands tree/shrub distribution efforts provided by County Conservation Departments. Service work contracts will be awarded to local and regional contractors.
