As Scott Johnson drove to his chosen ruffed grouse hunting spot on Minnesota’s season opener in mid-September, he felt a pang of pride passing parked cars at hunter walking trail trailheads.
“It’s great. It’s very rewarding when people are using these and hopefully, probably appreciating them,” said Johnson, who is the Ruffed Grouse Society’s forest conservation coordinator in Minnesota and northwestern Wisconsin.
The moment marked years of hard work by the RGS and local partners in northern Minnesota, who have dedicated their efforts to upgrading and restoring these trails. These improvements aim to enhance the experience for hunters and connect them more closely with the natural landscape, while also preserving crucial habitats for wildlife.
