The NGWH is held annually near Grand Rapids, Minnesota, an area renowned for its beautiful forests and lakes. Each fall, we host the hunt to gain support for habitat conservation and to unite conservationists in our mission to steward our forests and wildlife.
The beautiful Timberlake Lodge serves as the official headquarters for the NGWH. The Timberlake is known for its fine gourmet cuisine and friendly service. Lodging isn’t included with your registration, and all NGWH participants must make their own reservations. Be sure to mention you’re attending the Ruffed Grouse Society’s National Grouse and Woodcock Hunt to receive a discounted room rate.

Grand Rapids is approximately 90 miles northwest of Duluth and 175 miles north of Minneapolis-St. Paul. It’s accessed from Duluth via U.S. Route 2 and Minneapolis via U.S. Route 169. Driving time from Duluth is 1 ½ hours, and 3 ½ hours from Minneapolis.
The Grand Rapids Airport is approximately one mile from the Timberlake Lodge and is equipped to handle private jet aircraft only. Commercial flights are available into Hibbing (30 miles), Bemidji (65 miles), Duluth (80 miles), and Minneapolis-Saint Paul (175 miles).
Thursday and Friday are designated hunting periods. Some hunters also elect to stay after the event for hunting on their own. Although RGS doesn’t provide guides and dogs for these extended stays, talk with your RGS staff contact to find out who else might be sticking around.
A Minnesota non-resident small game license costs approximately $102.00 (A 72-hour license is $75.00). License fees aren’t included with your Hunt cost, and you must obtain your own hunting license. License agents are located near the facility or can be purchased easily online at: https://www.dnr.state.mn.us/licenses/hunting/index.html
A guide is provided to all NGWH participants (one per team), and guides with dogs are available for participants not bringing a dog, or those whose dog can’t hunt the entire two days. Guests with hunting dogs are encouraged to bring them, and they’re permitted indoors at the TimberLake Lodge. Just be sure to let us know when you submit your registration.
Two boxes of 25 shells are provided to each hunter. Additional shells may be purchased locally. Participants should bring their own shotguns (small, lightweight upland models with skeet, improved and modified chokes recommended).
Temperature range can vary during early October (from snow to mid-70s), so we advise being prepared for both. Waterproof hunting boots, brush pants and/or chaps are recommended. Per Minnesota state hunting regulations, hunters must wear blaze orange from the waist up.
Grouse and woodcock harvested by NGWH participants are cleaned, frozen and packaged for transport home. Birds can also be properly prepared whole for eventual mounting, if requested.
- Participants must be Life Sponsors or become Life Sponsors of The Ruffed Grouse Society or American Woodcock Society.
- Hunters will obey the rules of safe gun handling and courteously but firmly insist that others who hunt with them do the same.
- Participants must have a Minnesota Small Game License, obey all game laws and regulations and insist that their companions do likewise.
- Hunters will support conservation efforts, ensuring healthy forests and abundant wildlife for current and future generations.
- Each team of hunters will be assigned one hunting area on the first day and a different hunting area on the second.
- A guide will accompany each team. The guide is along to coordinate the hunt, record data and provide/handle dogs (if needed).
- Two-person teams may use any dog(s) as desired.
- Hunters and guides must wear blaze orange hats, coats and/or vests, etc. In addition, hunters and guides must wear protective eyeglasses.
