Can We Be Friends?

December 4, 2023 by Ruffed Grouse Society

Written By: Rick Neville. Hayward, WI

Last year, I set up a game camera on an active drumming log.  I captured many wonderful shots and videos of drumming and male grouse displays. We have all seen those pictures many times.  The shot that most interested me is shown here. With almost every predator in the woods trying to catch and kill grouse from the earth and sky, this picture captured a “moment of peace”.

It occurs to me, that Grouse and Snowshoe Hares have an awareness of other creatures that share their woods and can understand if they are predator, prey or perhaps “just friends.”
