RGS & AWS Forest Service Partnership Improves Habitat in Kentucky’s Daniel Boone National Forest, Draws Partner Praise

June 12, 2024 by Ruffed Grouse Society

A diverse roster of conservation and resource management agencies underscored the importance of sustainable, science-based forest management to wildlife in a stewardship agreement being led by the Ruffed Grouse Society & American Woodcock Society and the U.S. Forest Service. The multi-year partnership in the Daniel Boone National Forest in southeast Kentucky is improving close to a thousand acres of forest wildlife habitat. Habitat diversity, achieved when forests are managed to create a variety of age classes and structures, is critical to healthy forest wildlife populations, the stakeholder groups stressed. In addition, it will create 5.3 miles of controlled burn lines, create 1.2 miles of new access road construction and maintain more than 36 miles of hunter-walking trails, all contributing to the preservation and enhancement of the forest ecosystem and in coordination with the Chequamegon-Nicolet...

Satellite Tracking and the Science of Woodcock Migration

May 24, 2024 by Ruffed Grouse Society

by Erik Blomberg, Associate Professor and Chair, Department of Wildlife Fisheries and Conservation Biology, University of Maine Each year around the second week of March, I make a habit of standing in my central Maine backyard around dusk, waiting and hoping to hear the peent!s and twittering sky dance of the first male woodcock of spring. For me, the return of woodcock marks the true end of the Maine winter. Eight months later, sometime in November, my dog will point the last woodcock of the year, signaling the end of fall. I suspect I’m not the only one who uses woodcock...

Alder Cutting at Tionesta Lake to Improve Woodcock Habitat

May 20, 2024 by Ruffed Grouse Society

Forest County, Pennsylvania After the USACE consulted with Ben Larson of RGS, on ways to improve wildlife habitat along Tionesta Creek. Ben suggested they regenerate patches of alder along Tionesta Creek to improve habitat for woodcock, grouse and other wildlife. Ben also suggested that they create a hunter access/wildlife viewing trail through the area. Joe VanOrd of the USACE contacted our chapter for assistance with cutting the alder patches and creating the trail. After a meeting between USACE staff and chapter members, we decide to set up 2 workdays in March and April of 2023. We had a good turnout for...
