Trees of Time: Expanding the Legacy of Boquet River Restoration

September 13, 2024 by Ruffed Grouse Society

Read the full article at Trout Unlimited

In the early 1990s, TU volunteer Rich Redmen had the idea to use large Willow stakes to resurrect a deeply eroding stream bank on the Boquet River in Wadhams, N.Y.

At the time, it was a common practice to load eroding banks with large rocks, often called rip rap. But rip rap could cost 15 to 20 times more than a willow-staking project. Rip rap can also generate downstream flow issues and problems.

Chapter Project: Tionesta Lake Alder Renewal (US Army Corp of Engineers)

September 13, 2024 by Ruffed Grouse Society

US Army Corp of Engineers (USACE) consulted with Ben Larson of RGS & AWS on ways to improve wildlife habitat along Tionesta Creek. Larson suggested they regenerate patches of alder along Tionesta Creek to improve habitat for woodcock, grouse and other wildlife. He also suggested they create a hunter access/wildlife viewing trail through the area. Joe VanOrd of the USACE contacted our chapter for assistance with cutting the alder patches and creating the trail. After a meeting between USACE staff and chapter members, we decide to set up 2 workdays in March and April of 2023. We had a good turnout...

Chapter Highlight: MD DNR Cedar Point WMA

September 13, 2024 by Ruffed Grouse Society

Members of the Central MD Chapter have been in consultation with the WMA Manager for the past several months. The Chapter asked permission to hire a Contractor with RGS Funding to facilitate the DNR’s goal for accomplishing this Project. This Project was deemed necessary to recreate habitat “edges” for wildlife and particularly Woodcock; which frequent the WMA and use it as a migration stopover point and a wintering ground. The WMA has many swamps and is near the Potomac River...

August 28, 2024 by Ruffed Grouse Society

The Jersey Shore chapter of the American Woodcock Society and the NJ Fish and Wildlife team have completed our fourth partnership for a habitat project on NJ Wildlife Management areas. This important partnership between the two organizations has delivered 4 successful projects in NJ over the past 4 years. We assembled on Sunday May 19th, 2024 at Prospertown Lake WMA, Monmouth County NJ. This was a continuation of our 2021 project. We planted 126 alder trees to create staggered growth edges and also planted 20 persimmon fruit trees for the turkeys. We then applied seedling protector tubes so we can protect...
