Feathers on Broad Street

December 5, 2023 by Ruffed Grouse Society

Written by: Stephen Biello. Philadelphia, Pa At first thought after reading the title to this passage one might be thinking of the long history of Mummery associated with the city of Philadelphia. The annual New Year’s Day tradition that has spanned across the centuries, where 100s of men and women dressed in various costumes loaded with feathers and plums, similar to those worn at Mardi Gras in New Orleans. These Mummers perform, strut and drum like a proud rooster pheasant, a puffed out Tom Turkey or a grouse drumming in the spring. The route the Mummers Parade take is Northbound...

The A**hole Brothers

December 4, 2023 by Ruffed Grouse Society

Written by: Trout Whisperer. Two Harbors, MinnesotaImage provided by the RGS & AWS photo archive Small red and green sign on the door glowed, open. Not one vehicle in the parking lot, I thought, everybody works here, must walk. I opened the door, nobody, and I was gonna back out and leave when a ladies voice said, pick anywhere, I’ll have coffee in a jiff, just mixing my batter. Any chair I wanted, well I took one I could look out the only window of the place from, and without even me ordering, she was pouring me coffee, asking how...

Can We Be Friends?

December 4, 2023 by Ruffed Grouse Society

Written By: Rick Neville. Hayward, WI Last year, I set up a game camera on an active drumming log.  I captured many wonderful shots and videos of drumming and male grouse displays. We have all seen those pictures many times.  The shot that most interested me is shown here. With almost every predator in the woods trying to catch and kill grouse from the earth and sky, this picture captured a “moment of peace”.   It occurs to me, that Grouse and Snowshoe Hares have an awareness of other creatures that share their woods and can understand if they are...

The 2 Year Old

December 1, 2023 by Ruffed Grouse Society

Written by: Dennis Jeppsen. Brigham, UT This is almost too short. I was with my dog on point in this thick super steep nasty brushy draw. I told him to flush and he did. I piled the bird he went for it and I headed back up trying to get to the trail . Next time I saw the dog he was coming back from the trail with feathers no bird? I asked “Where’s the bird?” He did a quick 180 and went back to the trail and motioned with his nose to the bird laying in the middle...

GEMS Trail Dedication

November 30, 2023 by Ruffed Grouse Society

Written by: Joe Hill. Westmont, Illinois I am a member of the T. Armour Stanton Chapter (Illinois) of the RGS. I wanted to share a story about a group effort to help further small game habitat and promote small game hunting in the State of Michigan. I am 53 years old and have hunted, fished and enjoyed the outdoors my entire life, thanks, mostly, to my dad. My dad started hunting and fishing in the mid to late 1950’s and started coming up deer hunting to the UP of Michigan in ~1958. I hunted and fished with him since the mid-1970’s,...

First Flush

November 21, 2023 by Ruffed Grouse Society

Written by: Tommy Launer. Saint Marys, PA Every year the feeling is the same. Winter has rolled in, Christmas has come and gone, the Super Bowl played and suddenly it’s March. The season has passed us yet again and I spend my evenings sitting with the dogs, cleaning guns, taking inventory of gear, just doing anything to continue thinking of hunting. This long lull between the last day of season and the days when the weather will warm and we’re running dogs in green grass again is always the hardest.  We all have different methods to keep from going stir crazy. Those...
