Southeastern PA Habitat Field Day with PA Game Commission
Join the RGS & AWS Chapters of Southeastern Pennsylvania and staff from the Pennsylvania Game Commission for a hands-on habitat field day focused on
white-tailed deer and their impacts on forest wildlife habitat. The event will be held on State Game Lands 80. Inclement weather won’t cancel the program. The day begins at 10 a.m. with a welcome and light refreshments at the PGC parking lot off Swopes Valley Road near Suedberg. At 10:30 a.m., chapter updates, RGS national news and Pennsylvania Game Commission objectives for the site — including discussion of the recently constructed access trail funded by RGS — will be shared. A hot lunch will follow. Please bring a baked good for the morning gathering or a dessert for lunch. Hot and cold drinks will be provided.
In the afternoon, PGC southeast region foresters will lead volunteers in assembling six 20-by-20-foot habitat diversity enclosures and planting seedlings inside and outside the enclosures within a recent timber harvest. An additional site will be planted without fencing. A Pennsylvania Game Commission biologist will discuss deer browsing impacts on forest regeneration, and the ruffed grouse biologist will provide updates on current management efforts. Participants will also tour the harvest site to see deer impacts firsthand. Future field days will evaluate planting results and deer impacts.
Wear sturdy walking shoes, work gloves and safety glasses. Tools will be provided.
Access Swopes Valley Road on State Game Lands 80 via routes 645 or 443 from Interstate 81 at the Pine Grove exit.
