Greater Pittsburgh Area Chapter Woodcock Walk 2026

Join the Greater Pittsburgh Area Chapter President of RGS, Luke Onorato, and park staff in pursuit of one of the most unusual birds found in Pennsylvania. The woodcock, also known as the timberdoodle, night partridge, big-eye, bogsucker and mudsnipe, has seen a dramatic decline due to the loss of young forest habitat over many decades.
Pennsylvania is currently at a 50-year low for young forest habitat. The Department of Conservation and Natural Resources has teamed up with the Wildlife Management Institute, Ruffed Grouse Society and the National Wild Turkey Federation to create young forest habitat at several locations throughout Moraine State Park.
Participants will learn the importance of young forest habitat not only for woodcock but for all wildlife. After the presentation, participants will be led on a hike in search of woodcock to see them perform their spring mating ritual, known as the “sky dance.”
• Dress for the weather
• Wear sturdy shoes – trails may be wet and muddy
• Bring binoculars if you have them
• Bring a flashlight or headlamp for the walk out after dusk
We’re happy to offer this program at no cost to participants, but if you’re able, a suggested $10 donation would be greatly appreciated.
RSVP to Luke Onorato at lukeonorato@gmail.com. Event will be capped at first 30 RSVP’s
