Promoting Young Oak Forests Through Noncommercial Habitat Improvements in the Southern Appalachians

February 27, 2024 by Ruffed Grouse Society

Agreement Narrative: Promoting Young Oak Forests Through Noncommercial Habitat Improvements in the Southern Appalachians Primary Funder: American Forests Location: Daniel Boone National Forest (KY), George Washington & Jefferson National Forests (VA), Chattahoochee National Forest (GA) and Cherokee National Forest (TN). Innovation: Our project will restore young oak forests by implementing a noncommercial habitat improvement treatment on the Nantahala Ranger District of the Nantahala National Forest. The habitat improvement treatment will thin smaller diameter trees in the forest’s midstory to promote a high density of oak seedlings and saplings. The treatment will be completed in advance of a commercial timber harvest. Once the oak...

February 26, 2024 by Ruffed Grouse Society

Agreement Narrative: Minnesota Hunter Walking Trails, Public Land Recreational AccessPrimary Funder: Environment and Natural Resources Trust Fund through Legislative Citizen Commission Minnesota Resources Location: Throughout northern Minnesota Innovation: Approximately 1,000 miles of hunter walking trail networks across about 250 sites across state, federal and county lands exist in Minnesota.  Most were created in the 1970’s through 1990’s, often utilizing logging access routes and intending to be maintained to facilitate both recreational walking traffic and future disbursed timber harvests.  Many of these trail systems were established with support of RGS.  Long term or dedicated maintenance funding and maintenance planning have not been established. ...

East Zone Forest Habitat Management Project, Lemonade Timber Sale (Minnesota)

February 26, 2024 by Ruffed Grouse Society

Agreement Narrative: East Zone Forest Habitat Management Project, Lemonade Timber Sale

Primary Funder: Chippewa National Forest (Stewardship)

Location: Deer River Ranger District, Chippewa National Forest, Minnesota

Innovation: This is a non-timber short-form stewardship agreement. Through this short-form agreement, the U.S. Forest Service is providing RGS & AWS with Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (BIL) funding to conduct supplemental timber marking contracting on the Deer River Ranger District of the Chippewa National Forest. The specific timber marking project areas land on a portion of the forest within the Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe (LLBO) Reservation. Using this funding, RGS & AWS will likely contract a tribal…

Agreement Narrative: Glinda Stewardship SPA

Primary Funder: Ottawa National Forest (Stewardship)

Location: Kenton Ranger District, Ottawa National Forest, Michigan

Innovation: Repackaging timber sale that previously went no-bid when offered as a conventional timber sale contract. Non-commercial service work items include alder shearing and brush pile creation to further improve wildlife habitat quality and quantity throughout the project area.

Impact: The stewardship project will generate the following outputs across the 271-acre project area:

1.) 271 acres of commercial thinning and clearcuts to create young and open forest conditions

Black Duck Ranger Distric Stewardship (Minnesota)

February 17, 2024 by Ruffed Grouse Society

Agreement Narrative: Black Duck Ranger District Stewardship

Primary Funder: Chippewa National Forest (Stewardship)

Location: Black Duck Ranger District, Chippewa National Forest, Minnesota

Innovation: A classic commercial timber project integrated with forest wildlife habitat, forest health and forest products/ revenue objectives. Through U.S. Forest Service goods-for-services stewardship, the foundational commercial timber project produces patches of aspen age class diversity for forest health and wildlife habitat objectives plus timber revenue. Revenue is to be used to facilitate additional habitat and forest health enhancement work and prepare additional commercial timber sales.

Impact: Sale and contract administration of 83-acre “Hunter Walking Trail” timber sale. Timber harvest operations were…
