Figure 8 Hunting Access Project​ (New York)

RGS & AWS’s North Country Chapter is working with NY Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) and the forest manager LandVest to expand seasonal recreational access on the 3,939 Figure 8 Public Use Area in the Sable Highlands Conservation Easement Area. This project entails parking area and gate construction work that will open up the access road seasonally during bird hunting season and provide parking areas.

Finger Lakes National Forest Woodcock Habitat Restoration​ (New York)

The Finger Lakes National Forest Woodcock Habitat Restoration Project was initiated in the winter of 2022. RGS & AWS leveraged a grant from the National Forest Foundation to begin restoring woodcock habitat on the Hector District. We worked with the NF biologist to identify 7 blocks of woodcock habitat that needed to be reset to early successional habitat and the mastication work was completed by a local contractor in February 2022.

Paul Smith’s College Habitat Project (New York)​

Situated within Paul Smith’s College’s 14,000 acres of northern hardwood and conifer forestlands, this 20-acre timber harvest and demonstration site allows students and visitors to observe the results of wildlife-friendly habitat design while providing a hands-on experience for PSC forestry students to engage in the project layout, planning and implementation work.

Partridge Run WMA Stewardship Project​ (New York)

The Mid-Hudson RGS & AWS Chapter has recently signed a Voluntary Stewardship Agreement (VSA) with NY DEC Region 4 to enhance grouse habitat diversity on the 4,500 acre Partridge Run Wildlife Management Area in Albany County, NY

Massachusetts Dynamic Forest Restoration Initiative​ (Massachusetts)

The Massachusetts Dynamic Forest Restoration Initiative is a public/private lands partnership between RGS & AWS, Mass Wildlife, Mass DCR, Mount Grace Land Trust and National Wild Turkey Federation (NWTF) which will restore and enhance wildlife habitat diversity on over 2,000 acres across central and western Massachusetts – starting Summer 2022. This project is funded by the USFS’ Landscape Scale Restoration Grant.

Eastern Woodcock Migration Research Cooperative​ (Maine)

The Russ & Carole Chapter and Central Maine Chapter of RGS & AWS is supporting the Eastern Woodcock Migration Research Cooperative by providing funding over the next 3 years in support of a PhD research position that will work with Drs. Erik Blomberg and Amber Roth to continue the EWMRC’s woodcock research efforts.
