RGS & AWS And Partners Awarded Forest Service Landscape Scale Restoration Grant in Massachusetts

July 19, 2022 by Ruffed Grouse Society

RGS & AWS has recently been awarded $215,000 through the U.S. Forest Service’s Landscape Scale Restoration grant. The Massachusetts Dynamic Forest Restoration Initiative will coordinate and promote forest habitat restoration across public, private and conservation easement properties across central and western Massachusetts. The project aims to improve forest resiliency and health at landscape level on both public and private lands, which benefits Ruffed grouse, American woodcock, and dozens of other forest wildlife species. Along with our matching funds, the grant will enable RGS & AWS and our partners to implement forest habitat enhancement projects on over 1,600 acres of public lands, to...

June 29, 2022 by Nate Kennedy

The long-standing Triple Flush chapter, located in the southern Finger Lakes region of New York State, is back in action and making moves here in the Northeast! A crowd of nearly 60 hunters filled the venue, sharing stories, raising funds, and celebrating successful habitat management in their neck of the woods! Todd Waldron, RGS & AWS Northeast Forest Conservation Director said, “As part of a grant from the National Forest Foundation, Ruffed Grouse Society & American Woodcock Society recently worked...

Spring Reflections

June 18, 2022 by Nate Kennedy

The spring has sprung, and summer is near. In the last few years, I’ve spent a lot of time listening to folks tell me that there just aren’t any grouse around. Granted, we know the current situation needs our help, and we remain diligent in our efforts to support these birds. That said, I often wonder if there is any way to increase optimism while we continue our important work. Engaging in successful habitat management is first and foremost, but I think I’ve found another. Turkey hunting! Each spring I venture off into the turkey woods, often in areas where “there...

The Green Mountain Chapter, led by Terry Wilson and Nancy Anisfield, recently held the first ever Green Mountain Grouse-Together. This one-hour virtual event was a ton of fun, and a great chance for RGS & AWS members in Vermont and throughout the Northeast to connect, catch up, and make plans for the adventures ahead! RGS & AWS Director of Regional Development, Tripp Way said, “The Green Mountain Chapter’s Grouse-Together event was a huge success!  Congratulations to the Chapter, volunteers, and sponsors for banding together to celebrate all things grouse and woodcock. Not only was the VT upland community able to celebrate...

Know Your Cover – Northeastern U.S. Forests

June 15, 2022 by Ruffed Grouse Society

by Todd Waldron | RGS & AWS Northeast Region Forest Conservation Director The U.S. Northeast is home to more than 50 million acres of mixed northern hardwoods and boreal forests, and there are some notable grouse and woodcock hunting opportunities for those willing to travel. Along with its major east coast population centers, this diverse region contains several classic landscapes that have been traditional strongholds for our favorite upland bird species – including the north Maine woods, the 6-million-acre Adirondack Park, Vermont’s Northeast Kingdom, the White Mountains, Berkshires, Catskills and the Connecticut River Valley. The Northeast’s sprawling hardwood, pine and spruce forests...
