June 7, 2023 by Ruffed Grouse Society

Ruffed Grouse Society Hires Emily Sliski as Mid-Atlantic Regional Engagement Coordinator Emily Sliski Emily is a Pennsylvania native who grew up in a family with strong hunting and outdoor traditions and values. She holds a degree in Outdoor Recreation, and her past jobs have included guiding adventure recreation activities, hosting outdoor community outreach events and, most recently, directing a year-round camp and retreat center. Emily’s personal upland passion and a desire to be part of the conservation world are what led her to apply for the position with RGS & AWS. “I feel a sense of urgency and responsibility to ensure that ruffed...

President’s Message – Summer 2023

June 7, 2023 by Benjamin C. Jones

Seeking Solutions by Benjamin C. Jones | RGS & AWS President & CEO photo by  Asbed Iskedjian The National Forest System is important to many of us. It equates to tens of millions of acres for hunting, fishing and outdoor recreation. The majority of our members have a national forest within 100 miles of home, or even right next door. I killed my first white-tailed deer on a national forest and I’ve enjoyed countless memorable hunts since. Indeed, national forests are meaningful, and their management is an ongoing priority for RGS & AWS. Not many single landowners hold as much habitat opportunity as the U.S....

Gamebird Pizza

June 6, 2023 by Ruffed Grouse Society

by Jenny Nguyen-Wheatley If you’re looking for a recipe to please hunters and nonhunters alike, try using your gamebirds on pizza. Multiply this recipe to feed a crowd, and if you’re short on time, store-bought pizza dough will work just fine. My favorite is Pillsbury Pizza Crust, but be sure to follow the directions on the can for cooking the dough instead of what’s directed below for homemade dough. This recipe works best with mild gamebirds, such as ruffed grouse, pheasant, chukar and quail. Pizza is a great way to share your hard-earned wild game when you need to stretch meat a...

Patterns in the Forest

June 6, 2023 by Ruffed Grouse Society

Forest Openings and Pollinators Too by Scott Johnson, RGS & AWS Forest Conservation Coordinator – Minnesota & NW Wisconsin We RGS & AWS members talk a lot about the size, species and spacing of trees. We talk about how historical disturbances of wind and fire maintained a shifting mosaic of forest characteristics, providing that ideal mix of young, dense forests so important for brood rearing habitat for ruffed grouse and American woodcock, and older forests that are imperative for ruffed grouse winter habitat needs, as well as for future young forests. Figure 1. A wind throw opening in an aspen forest. We talk about...

Purina Joint Care

June 6, 2023 by Ruffed Grouse Society

Cambridge Dictionary defines a joint as “a place where two things are joined together.” In terms of your hard-charging sporting dog, think how important the knee, hip, ankle, shoulder, elbow and carpal joints are to his or her performance and comfort day in and day out. And factor in the pounding those respective joints take year after year. Purina has been thinking about it – and in June 2023 is introducing Joint Care, a new soft chew supplement formulated to support canine mobility and normal daily activity. This latest addition to the Purina Pro Plan Veterinary Supplements line provides three joint...
