The Wisconsin Forestry Revitalization Act Officially Passes

March 19, 2026 by Ruffed Grouse Society

The Wisconsin Forestry Revitalization Act (SB 456) represents a major step forward for the state’s forest economy, creating new markets for low-value wood and strengthening the long-term health of Wisconsin’s working forests. Central to the legislation is support for a proposed woody biomass facility in Hayward that would convert forest material into sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). This initiative is expected to drive up to $1.5 billion in total investment across Northern Wisconsin’s forest products sector, supported by performance-based incentives of up to $120 million in tax credits to attract private capital and secure the project locally. RGS & AWS and Aldo Leopold Foundation Partner on 2026 Conservation Membership Initiative

March 12, 2026 by Ruffed Grouse Society

The Ruffed Grouse Society & American Woodcock Society (RGS & AWS) has partnered with the Aldo Leopold Foundation to offer a special Conservation Membership package for 2026, highlighting the shared conservation values between the two organizations and the enduring legacy of renowned conservationist Aldo Leopold. The collaboration centers on Leopold’s philosophy of a “land ethic,” first introduced in his landmark book “A Sand County Almanac,” which encourages people to see themselves as members of a broader ecological community with a responsibility to care for the land and wildlife. “RGS & AWS is thrilled to partner with the Aldo Leopold Foundation in offering…

In Episode 845, host Steven Rinella explores the challenges facing these iconic upland birds and the landscapes they depend on. The episode also features insights from RGS & AWS VP of Conservation, Karl Malcolm, who discusses the critical role healthy, diverse forests play in sustaining grouse and woodcock populations. The conversation highlights how changes in forest age structure across the eastern U.S. have reduced the amount of early successional habitat…

Severe East Coast Winter Weather Results in Woodcock Die-offs

February 19, 2026 by Ruffed Grouse Society

The Cape May Peninsula in New Jersey has long been known as an important migratory stopover site for a myriad of birds in the Atlantic Flyway, including American woodcock. A recent bout of extreme weather on the East Coast led to the death of more than 170 woodcock at Cape May Point. The tragic event serves as a stark reminder of the fragile balance these birds maintain. A Perfect Storm Cape May Average Temperature for the Month of January 2026  The daily range of reported temperatures (gray bars) and 24-hour highs (red ticks) and lows (blue ticks), placed over the daily average high (faint…
