Timothy C. Flanigan 4/10/1945 – 6/6/26
The upland conservation community lost one of its most gifted storytellers with the passing of Timothy C. Flanigan. An award-winning photographer, accomplished writer and mentor, Tim dedicated countless hours to sharing the beauty of grouse and woodcock through his lens and his words. His generosity, talent and passion left an immeasurable mark on our organization and the outdoor community.
Tim was more than a contributor to RGS & AWS. He was a trusted friend, generously sharing his remarkable photography, writing and books with the organization simply because he believed in the mission. Time and again, he donated his work without asking for anything in return, knowing powerful images could connect people with the forests, birds and traditions we all cherish.
His photographs did more than document a hunt or a landscape. They captured emotion. Whether it was the intensity of drumming grouse or the quiet beauty of an autumn forest at sunrise, Tim had an extraordinary ability to preserve moments most of us experience only for a heartbeat. Through his lens, those moments became timeless.
His talent earned him countless awards throughout his career, many for work appearing in issues of Covers magazine, recognition that reflected not only his technical skill but also his unique ability to tell stories through imagery. Yet those who knew Tim will remember something even more meaningful than the accolades. They’ll remember his generosity.
He never hesitated to mentor an aspiring photographer or writer. He celebrated the success of others more enthusiastically than his own. His encouragement, thoughtful advice and genuine enthusiasm helped countless people develop their craft and find confidence in their work.
He was quick with a compliment, always willing to offer encouragement and genuinely invested in helping others succeed. Whether it was a conversation at an event, feedback on a story or a thoughtful note after seeing our latest work, his support meant more than he probably ever realized. He reminded all of us that the work we do matters.
Tim understood that conservation isn’t only accomplished through boots-on-the-ground habitat work. Sometimes it begins with a photograph that inspires someone to care. Sometimes it’s a story that reminds a reader why healthy forests matter. He spent decades using his gifts to build that connection between people and the outdoors.
Even in his final wishes, Tim’s commitment to conservation remained evident. Rather than asking only to be remembered, he asked that those wishing to honor his life consider supporting RGS & AWS. It was a final act of generosity from someone who had spent a lifetime giving back to the upland community.
The forests Tim loved will continue to change with the seasons. Grouse will still thunder from coverts. Woodcock will still dance across spring skies. Bird dogs will still freeze on point beneath October leaves. And thanks to Tim’s photographs, many of those moments will continue to live on long after the shutter clicked.
At RGS & AWS, we’re profoundly grateful for everything Tim gave to our organization and the people who make up our community. His photographs helped tell our conservation story. His writing brought readers closer to the birds and places they love. His friendship enriched our lives.
His legacy will continue to inspire everyone who picks up a camera, ventures into the woods or works to conserve the places he loved.
