Coraopolis, PA – The Ruffed Grouse Society (RGS) was privileged to receive a 2016 APEX Award for Publication Excellence for the 2015 Fall Hunting Special Edition of the Ruffed Grouse Society magazine. The award, given in the print magazines and journals category, marks the sixth consecutive year RGS has received an APEX award.

Book Review – A Grouse Hunter’s Almanac

Mark Parman has been a longtime contributor of classic grouse and woodcock hunting stories to the Ruffed Grouse Society magazine. A favorite Parman articles is “What He Carried”, which was published in the fall 2013 issue and features an introspective story about the possessions and superstitions that make grouse and woodcock hunters a unique group. The story starts with, “Each possession (of a grouse hunter) brings with it reminders of special days gone by.” If you are a grouse hunter, you understand this inexplicable phenomenon. The story talks about the symbols of grouse hunting that captivate us all throughout the year. He writes, “In late winter, he notes a grouse feather floating across the wood floor of his living room or kitchen, escapees from his gamebag, or he finds one stuck to the wet nose of his dog. He doesn’t mind the feathers. He picks one up, twirls the rachis in his fingers and is carried back to October.” Has this happened to any of you during bitter cold January? I suspect it has.

Ted Dick, Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Forest Gamebird Coordinator*, was interviewed by host “The Captain” Billy Hildebrand and the DNR’s Mike Kurre on KFAN’s (FM 100.3 Minneapolis/St. Paul) Outdoors show Thursday evening, June 23, 2016. You may listen to his interview discussing ruffed grouse, the #1 upland gamebird in Minnesota, and American woodcock starting at the 26:00 minute mark and running to 43:10. The hosts then briefly discuss American woodcock hunting. Listen now…

Late spring tends to be the high-water mark every year for new bird dog puppies. For first-time hunting dog owners that often leads to first-time e-collar purchases. Many of them usually just have two e-collar features of concern, the remote design layout and price. After users are acclimated on the correct of their e-collar unit, they sometimes find themselves desiring additional features. Take heed, this is one of those times that spending extra on the “bells and whistles” may be a good idea.

Gladwin – 100 Years of Grouse and Woodcock Tradition

I was honored to be one of the speakers at the recent 100th anniversary event at the Gladwin Field Trail Area (GFTA) in Meredith, Michigan.  The GFTA is one of the premier if not THE premier field trial area in the nation.  While all RGS members are not Field Trialers and all Field Trialers are not RGS members we all share the common bond of loving bird dogs and appreciating young forest habitat and the wildlife that need it.

RGS and AWS staff and their dogs convened at headquarters in Pittsburgh last week to plan for the future of habitat programs, membership, events and communications.

RGS and AWS staff and some of their grouse dogs convened at headquarters near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania last week to plan for the future of habitat programs, membership initiatives, events and communications. Numerous presentations and break-out sessions allow staff to collaborate planning at the national level and also specific to their regions. Biologists, regional directors and headquarters staff are able to meet and plan in-person and brainstorm ways to create and implement more effective and efficient programs that enhance healthy forests that support abundant wildlife and preserve our sporting traditions for future generations.

Good Neighbor Authority program gives timber and wildlife a boost

Original article: OUTDOORS: Timber management, wildlife projects to get boost under Good Neighbor Authority program by Paul A. Smith of the Milwaukee Wisconsin Journal Sentinel was posted May 28, 2016.

Wisconsin recently conducted its first timber sales under the Good Neighbor Authority, an expanded federal-state partnership that could substantially increase forestry management and habitat improvement projects on the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest.
